Treasurer Needed!

Due to an unforeseen move, the Holyrood Community League must regretfully say farewell to its newly-elected Treasurer.

We are urgently seeking to fill this vital board position. If you are good with numbers, and would like to volunteer in your neighbourhood, please consider applying.

Holyrood’s accounting and reporting system is simple, well-organized and readily assumed by an incoming treasurer. In addition to  financial management duties, the treasurer is part of the team that sets the vision for the league. At our 10 monthly board meetings and annual planning session, we are all involved in discussing matters of policy, finance, programs, personnel and advocacy.

Being a Holyrood Community League board member is fun, rewarding and a great way to feel connected to your community! For more information on the treasurer position, please contact Wendy Weir at president@holyroodcommunity.org .

Holyrood Soccer News

AO8SMKGOI4

Holyrood Community League is excited to announce the formation of the Holyrood Soccer Coordinators Group who will oversee our community soccer program and ensure that soccer remains alive and well in our neighbourhood! A huge thanks to outgoing coordinators Katrina and Teara who did an outstanding job running the soccer program over the last couple of years. The new group consists of Gina (Volunteer/Budget Coordinator), Shea-Lynn (Referee Coordinator), Rick (Equipment and Facility Coordinator), and Jared (Communication/Team Coordinator). The group is currently in the process of formulating tasks and a timeline for the 2016/2017 Indoor and Outdoor Program. If anyone is interested in joining the Holyrood Soccer Coordinators Group and helping out with certain tasks over the upcoming year, please contact Jared at soccer@holyroodcommunity.org.

As much as we all love cheering our kids on in the rain (and sometimes snow), while swatting mosquitoes, did you know that you could also be watching them play soccer from the comforts of a climate controlled facility? Indoor soccer registration for the upcoming 2016/2017 season is currently underway and available online through the EMSA Soccer Portal (https://emsasoccerportal.com).

After having registered your child online, registration needs to be finalized by parents visiting one of the following in-person registration dates: Ottewell Hall 9520-93A Ave Sept 8 (6:30pm-8:30pm), or Bonnie Doon Mall 82nd Ave & 83rd St (by Tony Romas) Sept 17 (10am-2pm). Indoor soccer is a fun, relatively low time commitment fall/winter activity that allows players to further develop their soccer skills.

Teams are typically community based, with an option for amalgamating communities to obtain sufficient player numbers per team. For more information on the Edmonton Southeast Soccer indoor program, as well as upcoming Storm tryout dates program please visit http://emsasoutheast.com.

Seniors Engagement Event – Mature Neighbourhood Overlay Review

The City of Edmonton’s Zoning Bylaw Team, as a part of the Mature Neighbourhood Overlay Review project, invites you the Seniors Engagement Event.  This consultation is specifically for seniors who live in Edmonton’s mature neighbourhoods.  Come and share your opinions.

The Mature Neighbourhood Overlay is a subset of regulations within Edmonton’s Zoning Bylaw that controls how new development fits into existing neighbourhoods.  We are reviewing these regulations to provide greater certainty to communities and the development industry, and to ensure that new residential development fits in with the surrounding community in mature neighbourhoods.

The event will occur on June 28th from 130 to 330PM at the Southeast Edmonton Seniors Association – 9350 – 82 Street NW.  Refreshments will be served.

Please RSVP to Christopher Wilcott, Principal Planner (christopher.wilcott@edmonton.ca or 780-442-7579) by 430PM, June 24th.  Space is limited to 25 participants.

Holyrood Park Remediation

Monday, June 13th has been set as the start date for remediation work in our park this summer.

SG Landscaping will be completing some remediation on the park as per the one-year warranty on their work. The fixes include sodding the flat areas surrounding the bike bumps and the bumps themselves will be re-sodded/watered in for more permanent turf durability. In response to safety concerns, the gravel path will also be rerouted so that it doesn’t exit the bumps directly onto the busy toddler play area of the sidewalk.

Additionally, the former construction staging area (adjacent to the parking lot & spray deck) will be brought back to pre-construction condition by either sodding or aggressive seeding and watering.

Fencing will be going up to completely close off the bike bumps area starting June 13th – and will likely remain up for several weeks over the summer. Short term pain for long term gain!

The City of Edmonton will be supervising and inspecting the work, and Wendy Weir (HCL President) will be the community contact. If you have any questions or concerns, please send them to president[at]holyroodcommunity.org.

Soccer Coordinators Needed

Did you know that this spring there are 158 children in Holyrood playing soccer?  This would not have been possible without our wonderful soccer coordinators, Katrina Radeka and Teara Lapp.  After many years of volunteering, both Katrina and Teara are now stepping down and we need new Soccer Coordinators to keep this important program in Holyrood.

Holyrood will not be able to offer future indoor or outdoor soccer programs without new coordinators stepping forward.

Responsibilities include; attending monthly meetings at the S.E Soccer Centre.  Planning and organizing outdoor registrations and volunteers.  Training, organizing and keeping coaches informed of upcoming events.  Managing a budget, the equipment and organizing the teams.  Answering emails and working alongside the Holyrood Community League Programs Director.

We know this sounds a lot, however if there are several people interested these responsibilities can be shared.

Contact Justine for further details at programs@holyroodcommunity.org or 780-951-3151.

Wanted: A Few Good Members!

Like to get to know your community better? Interested in sharing your skills, passion and energy with a group of like-minded people? Want to make a difference where you live?

Opportunity waits, just down the street! We have some newly-opened volunteer positions on the Holyrood Community League Board of Directors, and are looking for candidates to stand for election at our April 28th AGM.

The Board is a dynamic group of Holyroodians who are committed to our community. We’re constantly striving to make our neighbourhood a great place to call home. Help us make that happen by considering one of these positions:

Vice President: Learns the duties and responsibilities of the president, and keeps informed on community league issues. Works closely as an advisor and consultant to the president, and fills the president role in his or her absence. Volunteers for key community league programs, events and initiatives as needed.

Secretary: Notifies board members of meetings, circulates agendas and ensures quorum. Records all minutes during board and general meetings; circulates minutes in a timely fashion. Responsible for league record-keeping: bylaws, minutes, motions, agreements, etc. Keeps board contact information up-to-date with associated organizations.

Programs Director: Organizes and oversees the regular programs offered by the community league, including sports, fitness, and summer programs. Acts as the board contact for community soccer, playschool and playgroup. Applying for grants, arranging registration and payment, keeping records, and organizing facility access are among some of the responsibilities of this position.

Director at Large – Civics & Development: Monitors civic concerns such as land use changes, development proposals and transportation issues. Gathers and communicates information to the board and the community, liaises with government and other organizations, and facilitates discussion around civic issues facing Holyrood.

Director at Large – Park & Grounds: Ensures the upkeep and maintenance of Holyrood’s amazing “outdoor assets”, including our park area, plaza, playground, landscaping, rink, and parking lots. Liaises with the City of Edmonton to ensure appropriate maintenance, repair and improvements as needed.

Orientation, training and mentorship will be provided for all new board members. In addition to their specific duties, all board members are part of the team that sets the vision for the league. At our 10 monthly board meetings and annual planning session, we are all involved in discussing matters of policy, finance, programs, personnel and advocacy.

Board membership is a great way to make new friends, feel more connected in your community, build new skills, and make your own unique contribution. What could be more rewarding than making a difference right in the place where you live?

If you’d like more information on how one of these positions might be a good fit for you, please contact Wendy Weir, President, at 780-431-0511 or president@holyroodcommunity.org .
