Please consider volunteering for our 2023 fundraising casino. Casinos are the lifeblood of a non-profit organization and constitute the majority of our operating budget for the next 2 years. Without this casino we won’t be able to offer the programs and events that our community relies on. That means no community league day event, no rink in the winter, no sports or fitness programming or community swim times.
We have available shifts for the following times: Shifts – 10am-7pm; 6pm-4am; 10:30pm-3:30am. There are various positions to be filled in the Count Room, as the Banker, Cashier or a chip runner. Please email ‘megan at holyroodcommunity dot org’ for more information. Our casino dates are September 21 & 22, 2023, at the Starlight Casino (formerly the Palace Casino).

ANNUAL GENERAL REPORT
POSITION DETAILS
President: Would you like to make a significant contribution to your neighbourhood? Do you want to build board leadership skills? Are you keen to work with a team of like-minded individuals who care about our fabulous Holyrood community? Can you commit to an hour-long meeting online, once a month? If so, you might be the next President of the Holyrood Community League! The HCL Board is a high-functioning, well-organized, fun group of volunteers who are keen to welcome and support a new leader. If you think you might have the time, interest and skills to be a community league president, please consider this opportunity!
Some of the responsibilities of the President role include:
Facilities Director: Oversees the physical operation of the Holyrood Community Hall and Rink Building. The league is currently moving to a model of paid facility management, so the Facility Director will have a significantly different role from past years. They will act as the board’s liaison with our paid facility management contractor, who will be responsible for ongoing maintenance, repairs, and upgrades to our buildings. Because of the reduction in duties, the Facility Director will also oversee maintenance and upgrades to the league’s outdoor assets, including our skating rink, parking lot, and the grounds immediately surrounding our buildings (our “licensed area”). Estimated time commitment: three hours per week, plus approximately four hours per month to prepare for and attend monthly board meetings.
Casino Coordinator: This role is vital to our board as this year is a casino year. The casinos are the lifeblood of a non-profit organization and constitute the majority of their operating budget. Our casino dates are September 21 & 22, 2023. We will be doing a call out for volunteers for the casino later on this year, but we absolutely need a casino coordinator to get us ready for this very important event.
Playgroup Coordinator: Oversees the weekly Community Caregiver Connection Playgroup, out of space rented from the Holyrood Community Church. Creates a welcoming, healthy and inclusive environment for parents of children under 5 and their little ones to meet, play and connect! Opportunity exists within this position for scheduling informative or entertaining guests to enhance/educate parents or offer unique learning opportunities for the kids.
Holyrood Development Committee Chair: This position reports to the civics director and is not required to attend board meetings, although there is a requirement to work with the civics director to create a monthly report with updates for the board. The HDC Chair will be joining our development committee, which is a very dedicated group that reviews the development proposals for upcoming developments in Holyrood. Some public speaking experience is required, as this individual may be asked to speak with reporters, the public, and in worst case scenarios, present to City Hall during a city council meeting.
Committee Members: We have 2 active and welcoming committees that some of our residents may be interested in participating with.
Holyrood has launched a baby-sitter’s registry in the community for babysitting needs. Sitters must be certified in a babysitter’s course, have proof of the course and have guardian permission to be added to the list.
Interested babysitters can register here APPLICATION FORM
Parents interested in being matched with a babysitter can email communications@holyroodcommunity.org to express your interest.
**We have to remind everyone to be as safe as possible during this uncertain time, and make sure that you stay home if you are sick. Please don’t contact any potential babysitters to care for a sick child, or if anyone in your household is sick.**

The Fulton Ravine South Park is located along the Fulton Ravine in the heart of residential communities, near local businesses and the Capilano library, and is a unique park that incorporates the existing Capilano skatepark. The skatepark has an innovative design that is enjoyed by the community, including many families who bring their young children to use scooters here. Unfortunately, the skatepark is currently the only amenity in the park. There is nowhere to sit, and no shade or any other features. The South East Community Leagues Association (SECLA) conducted a formal community survey in 2016 to ask what would be needed in the park, and the design plan reflects what we heard from you. Some of the key features include:
Now more than ever, we understand that small neighbourhood parks are essential for health and well-being. SECLA is working with the City on this project to add amenities in the park, but we need your help to get us over the finish line. We have launched a GoFundMe for this project.
The preliminary estimated cost for these improvements is $550,000. The good news is that SECLA has already raised $500,000+ thanks to hard-working volunteers and caring residents. We estimate that we have an additional possible $25,000 in funds we are likely to receive.
Construction is slated to begin this spring regardless of the shortfall. However, if we cannot make up the shortfall or if there are significant cost overruns, then we will have to remove some of the features from the concept plan.
Donations can be made through the GoFundMe or via cheque. Donations of $20 or more by cheque are eligible for a tax receipt. The donor’s complete name and mailing address must be provided, and the cheque should be made out to ‘The City of Edmonton’. Please let us know and we can arrange pickup and/or you can mail cheque to the SECLA address (PO Box 38025, RPO Capilano, Edmonton, Alberta T6A 3Y6) so we can ensure donations are allocated for this project. We will post periodic updates on cheque donations since they will not be included in the GoFundMe tracker. For more information or to assist with funding, feel free to contact us at: projects@secla.ca.
Thank you to the following donors who have already contributed to this project, we are so grateful for your support:
Please stay tuned to SECLA’s website (secla.ca), Facebook page (@SECLAEdmonton) or Twitter (@SECLA_yeg) as new details will be posted as well as on the GoFundMe page. You are all welcome to the opening day celebration, hopefully planned for fall 2021!
